English term

costly Practical

English to French Art/Literary Philosophy
Good evening!

I have difficulties translating "costly practical" in this sentence.

"It has proved far more difficult to secure adequate support for basic progress in science than for the applications of science, because of the seeming vagueness of the enterprise, especially when high-priority, costly practical goals have to be met.”

Thank you very much

Cécile
