Discussion

Coqueiro Dec 6, 2012:
with Andrew erfüllen ~ bevölkern (hier)
Lancashireman Dec 6, 2012:
Gothic typeface? ersüllten > erfüllten (filled/populated)
Schöpser > Schöpfer (creator)
Jim Tucker (X) Dec 6, 2012:
Himmel has nothing to do with Altertum here Himmel is accusative, object of erfüllten (parallel w Erde and Unterwelt.
blavatsky (asker) Dec 6, 2012:

David Hollywood Dec 6, 2012:
my suggestion is pure guesswork as we don't have any real context to go on ....
Johanna Timm, PhD Dec 6, 2012:
for starters: grammar it's certainly a genitive: "der Himmel des Alterthumes", i.e. der Himmel [der Völker] des Alterthumes" -> der Himmel, wie ihn die Völker des Altertums deuteten/verstanden (mythologisch)
....but more context would make things clearer!
AllegroTrans Dec 6, 2012:
Context I agree with Helen
Have you checked to see if this author's work (or part of it) has already been translated?
Helen Shiner Dec 6, 2012:
Context May we have the context, please - at the very least one sentence in which this term appears. 'Ancient firmament' or 'ancient heavens' would be fine on the face of it, but how can we judge?
