Establishing shot / atmospheric establishing shot

"Establishing shot.
Opening shot or sequence, frequently an exterior 'General View' as an Extreme Long Shot (ELS). Used to set the scene."

This form of shot is often referred to in film making. It could always be qualified with "atmospheric", as per example below:

This film review describes the success of an "establishing shot" in creating "atmosphere" relevant to the storyline:

"But at least that establishing shot got my attention. And although it might have confused a casual viewer, it established the humorous atmosphere that transferred well to the first dialogue scene."

"The establishing shot evokes John Milton’s “dark satanic mills” and the gusto with which the north of England took to the industrial revolution as we see the mills overshadow the cramped terraces and inhabitants. "

Example sentence:

"This movie is good-looking. Atmospheric establishing shots, eyeball-eating close-ups, evocative landscapes, good costumes. "

long shots

In cinematography, long shots are used precisely to reflect the general atmosphere.

disagree freekfluweel : a long shot refers to distance not content, although it usually depicts the character. http://userhome.brooklyn.cuny.edu/anthro/jbeatty/COURSES/glo... What you mean would be a: extreme long shot.

neutral Lara Barnett : Agree with freekfluweel. This definition is describing what "long shots" can be used for. The term does refer to the distance of the subject to the view/lens. (As far as I know.)
