In cinematography, long shots are used precisely to reflect the general atmosphere.

: a long shot refers to distance not content, although it usually depicts the character. http://userhome.brooklyn.cuny.edu/anthro/jbeatty/COURSES/glo... What you mean would be a: extreme long shot.

: Agree with freekfluweel. This definition is describing what "long shots" can be used for. The term does refer to the distance of the subject to the view/lens. (As far as I know.)
