French term

formation au montage d'un banc

French to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial
This is part of a lab technician's job description

The lab technician must provide:
formation au montage d'un banc d'un collègue destiné à l'aider ou à le remplacer.

My problem is:
The lab technician must train a colleague to set up a test bench to help him...but replace him?
Doesn't make sense. If he is training him, the aim is for the colleague to be autonomous??
or
Does it mean, to help him and to help him replace it??
Any help appreciated.

Thanks for help and clarification to everyone.
Awarding points to B DFicnch (fr-translation deserved points too!) for broader suggestions
Di Penney Jul 16, 2012:
I think it must mean successor training He is required to train assistants and/or his eventual successor in the case that he leaves or is promoted. I've had to do this on quite a few occasions before, but I don't think it was ever in my job description!

French term (edited): formation au montage d\'un banc

training in setting up a test bench

He is responsible for training his assistants and successor in post. This is quite a normal requirement. I recall that Lewisham Council certainly had something similar in its job descriptions in the 1980s.

Or: training to set up a test bench.

However, you may want to amend the word order to insert who they train in the middle. E.g.
training their assistants or successor in post in the setting up of a test bench
training their assistants or successor in post to set up a test bench
