Italian term

aiuto alla persona

Italian to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. branch of civic service work

Thanks Lorraine!
Lorraine Buckley (X) (asker) Jun 4, 2012:
@ Wendy You are quite right. I have to stay generic and, as Liam suggests, cover a broad field rather than a particular job, just as the other fields (environment, disaster planning etc) are. Indeed I will be dropping the word 'services' as I see it used prevalently by commercial organizations in relation to care.
Wendy Streitparth Jun 3, 2012:
IMHO you can't say "home care services" because we do not know that the people are still at home/in a home. Maybe personal care (services)

social care

In practice it would mean someone whose title is 'care worker' and so the field would be 'care work'. However, I would be uncomfortable translating this as a specific job title or field. The context of the term is one in a list of broad fields for Italian National Civil Service. Clearly, the position would not be one of a health or social care professional. It would rather involve social, personal, individual or community based work. I would therefore translate the term as *social care*. In line with the other national civil service fields it is sufficiantly broad describing, 'the provision of individual support and attendance to vulnerable, sick or disabled people who are unable to provide fully for themselves'. (Alcock, 2003, p.97)
Example sentence:

Encouraging commissioners to promote sustainable development across the *social care* sector.

SCA is a UK organisation of individuals and corporate organisations involved in *social care*. This means all job roles – Supporting Caring and Assisting people to live the kind of life they want with......

individual care

Or perhaps "support". I remember a friend whose civil service was helping a blind person. I think it's important to distinguish from "badanti".
Note from asker:
thanks, Miriam, sounds nice and all-embracing!
