Norwegian term

styggfin

Norwegian to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
We're talking here about the central character in the movie "Corpse Bride" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0121164/), characterized in my source as "Den styggfine brura".

I've seen examples of "styggfin" being used for both "smoking hot" (in other words, really, really good looking) and OTOH as "ugly and beautiful at the same time". The latter seems more appropriate for this particular context. Anyone have something that might continue the wordplay from the source? Or failing that, something more succinct than "ugly and beautiful at the same time"?

Know nothing about the film but would "dead beautiful" satisfy your wordplay needs or is that just a UK usage?

drop dead gorgeous

Just a suggestion that might work well in this context, as it accurately conveys the meaning and also brings in the notion of dead, since it's referring to the Corpse Bride.

beautiful(ly) ugly

beautiful ugly
Beautiful ugly is a term used in modeling, when a model has such striking or odd features that they could be considered quite beautiful or very ugly. This is especially rare, and highly desired, especially in couture shoots.

Very few beautiful uglies exist, as many are simply labled unatractive, and unsutable for any type of modeling.

A very good example of such a person is Omahyra Mota, a Dominican supermodel. Her beauty (or lack there of) is completely in the eye of the beholder.

1. beautifully ugly
Is a description of someone who looks good far away but not so good close up.
Someone who is unconventionally sexy in a wrong sort of way.
He is beautifully ugly but I'm kinda attracted to him.

Although, she looked quite pretty and punk in Omahyra and Boyd, so I guess she's a beautiful ugly model.

Excluding the fact I'm not grossly beautiful, a vampire…or blonde for that matter.

scary beautiful

Beautiful and scary at the same time.
Note from asker:
Thanks. It's put me onto "terrifyingly beautiful", which appeals to my (often unrequited) love of word play.

Damned pretty!

This is dialect. In Trøndelag, where I'm from, we often say "styggfin" about someone who's very pretty! It definitely shouldn't be translated literally, as in "ugly pretty"
Note from asker:
Thanks. I had thought along these very lines at first, but the context of the "Corpse Bride" got me to thinking of a possible word play. I'll keep your suggestion in mind with the others.
