Italian term

filtrato dolce

Italian to English Science Wine / Oenology / Viticulture wine history

probably a technical term - is there an english translation?

Don't apologise, Stefina I may well have based my entry on the same source (I'm fairly sure I didn't use that site) and in any case both pages were published over 12 years ago.

I'm sorry Giles but I didn't know the entry was yours...
I found the translation on this site:

that's all...

Watson's Wine Glossary Hi Charles and Stefina.

"Filtrato dolce"/"sweet filtrate" is included in Watson's Wine Glossary. In fact, Stefina seems to have copied my entry on the topic, which I don't mind although it would have been nice if she had mentioned the source!

The grapes (Moscato, Ribolla Gialla etc) are separated from the stalks immediately before pressing and the must obtained is vinified off the skins. The next step is to form the so-called "coperta" and to treat the must to clean and disinfect it. The first filtration is carried out and the process is repeated regularly so that the wine remains sweet. The product thus obtained is known as sweet filtrate.

Yes! Yes Charles that's right...I found another site where the term "sweet filtrate" is used. In this case it would be better to use this as it refers to the product obtained from this particular process....read here:

filtrato dolce thanks stefina! it seems to be a noun rather than an adjective though, would it be correct to put 'sweet filtrate'? charles
