The relationships are several standard deviations different to what they should be. As the author refers to "relative value opportunites", I would guess that the "relationships" are the relationships between these opportunities (as he says, they are relative!).

: No, the standard deviations simply reflect the overall data distribution and cannot have the "wrong" values. It is a few individual values that can be several SDs from the mean and, thus, present opportunities.
