English term

multiple standard deviations out of whack

English Bus/Financial Finance (general)
Relative value opportunities are also in abundance with relationships sometimes multiple standard deviations out of whack.

At first I thought it meant "many standard deviations from the mean", but now I'm not so sure.
Also, what does "relationships" refer to in this context?

Thanks a lot for your help!

several standard deviations away from what they should be

The relationships are several standard deviations different to what they should be. As the author refers to "relative value opportunites", I would guess that the "relationships" are the relationships between these opportunities (as he says, they are relative!).

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : Up to a point. See explanation of relative values at: http://investmentscore.com/editorials/big-opportunity--relat... I think it is these relationships that are 'out of wack'.

agree B D Finch : i.e. they are on the fringes of the distribution and, therefore, considerably over- or under-valued. However, this could possibly be more hyperbole than literal and precise calculation.

Thank you, BD! Yes, several SDs sounds like an exageration...

Peer comment(s):

disagree B D Finch : No, the standard deviations simply reflect the overall data distribution and cannot have the "wrong" values. It is a few individual values that can be several SDs from the mean and, thus, present opportunities.
