English term

cradle notching

English to Persian (Farsi) Art/Literary History Tradition
Greetings,

This tradition may well be found in parts of Iran as it persists in some villages in Eastern Turkey, where it is known as ‘beşik kertmesi’. While completely unknown as a tradition in Western Turkish cities, you will find it referenced in love songs:

Importantly, here is a picture of a notch:

Of course, the notch in the photo has been made professionally; cradle-notching is carried out by two fathers usually in a rough way with a penknife on the cradle of each child in order to betroth a baby boy to a baby girl. Of course, it has nothing to do with child marriage.

Best wishes, and many thanks,

Simon

Many thanks, Ahmad. Perhaps it's specifically a Turkish / Turkic thing, then. (Turkic is used for Turks outside the Republic of Turkey.)
Ahmad Hosseinzadeh Nov 8, 2011:
Not in eastern parts of Iran I haven't seen and heard of such a custom here in eastern parts of Iran. Maybe those who live in north-west near Turkey borders know something about it.
