Hallo,
Vielen Dank,
Patricia

is IMHO what the author means here; I don't think this is a dictionary question at all, otherwise he'd have used another term.

I assume this is just a press review of the van. And after all, headroom IN the vehicle would hardly help as a towing-truck, would it?

Comment: "Thanks to all of you for your help. Thanks for your suggestion, David, makes sense to me. And thanks, Rowan, for your explanation, that is probably what it is. I'd split the points, if I could.
Thanks again and have a good weekend,
Patricia"

Rowan Morrell
: One possibility; not sure if it fits here though. See the suggestions David and I have supplied.

I think it could be the equivalent of our little AA vans (rather than the towing trucks!)

mobile workshop; workshop van
From the research I have done, "Werkstattwagen" seems to mean a variety of things. As Jerrie has already mentioned, Collins offers "breakdown truck" (or "wrecker" for US English). But the Leo dictionary suggests "mobile workshop". Laixicon prosposes "tool and gear wagon/truck".
Eurodicautom has the widest variety of ideas. In a railways context, it suggests "workshop vehicle". For mining and quarries, "mobile workshop". For general transport, "workshop van", defined as being "equipped with various machines and tools". Other possibilities in a general transport context are "equipment car" or even "travelling workshop"!
When you take all of these suggestions into account, it would appear that a "Werkstattwagen" is a bit more than just a tow truck, as Collins seems to be implying. I think it's a kind of "garage on wheels", and could probably be best translated by something like "mobile workshop". Hope this has been of assistance.
