A google search reveals that "ingeniería inicial" appears to mean something like "engineering set up" or "first design". Any suggestions for how to translate it here in this more metaphorical (perhaps) context?

when originally devised
An alternate meaning for ingeniar is devise. It looks like that is more what the text is looking for.

I believe in retaining creative images like "ingeniería" if they fit in the translation, to do otherwise is to "bowdlerize" the author's writing and dilute the creativity in it
