Superior Courts are High Courts, it doesn't mean the Supreme Court. For example, here in the US you have District Courts (something akin to Court of the First Instance that you find in many European countries) and Superior Courts. See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribunal_d'instance

For what it's worth Joanna I wouldn't translate Tribunal de Grande Instance as Superior Court - it doesn't mean that and it isn't the Supreme Court of France. Speaking personally I always give Courts their original French title and put an "explanation" in brackets. For Tribunal de Grande Instance I always put "Regional High Court".

It's just a title. But elsewhere in the document I find that it is Family Court, Tribunal de Grande Instance (Superior Court) so I guess it is a particular chamber of the court?
