I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with this phrase, as the deadline is coming up very soon.
The document is a project overview dealing with the upgrade of locomotives. With this particular model, this function will be improved and made more cost effective.

What I gather from this is that they are talking about the traction vehicles (=locomotives) being suitable for regular service on main lines, or "as main line engines/locomotives", as well (as opposed to other, auxiliary service, such as marshalling/shunting).
"Verzahnung" is a slightly old-fashioned term for "integration", or in this context: "including in (close/seamless) combination with ...".

For "Verzahnung" I found "dovetailing"
The person who felt the term was being used as a metaphor is I am sure right, and the "mit" fits in nicely with our "dovetailing"; if I had the rest of the sentence I might be able to help you with the "Streckentraktion"; hope this helps a little anyway.

Verzahnung here means no more than "together with", "in conjunction", "in tandem/combination", IMO. If "integration" is used, you'd have to say "is integrated into...". Besides, not sure what they really mean by Streckentraktion. I think they refer to rail tracks, not the traction these tracks may lend to the vehicle. Could be the writer confuses the two.
