In these calculations, the optimum mass ratio of NaCN to O2 will be in the range 9.4:1 to 18.8:1. It is now generally accepted that equation (15) represents the dominant step in the two-step reaction mechanism (equations 15, 16) by which gold dissolves in cyanide solution and that therefore the lower NaCN:O2 mass ratio of 9.4:1 will be the optimum.
