English term

File

English to Spanish Law/Patents Law (general) Judicial Process
Translation of the word "file" - as in "file in a complaint" is persistently trnanslated as "archivar". I feel this is the wrong translation and have suggested "registrar", "entrablar", or "presentar" but "archivar" persists nonetheless. Could you opine on the translation for "file" (not the physical action of archiving a document but having a document file-stamped for docketing/entering into an action). Thank you.

Question Clarification. I think I confused the question by using complaint. I mean is the filing of any pleading in a case-complaint, answer, motion, etc. A more specific example is if I were to want to translate "you need to file your opposition at the filing office". Normally, I would hear it interpreted as "necesita archivar su oposicion en la oficina de archivos". It doesn't seem right to me. Would you not say, "necesita REGISTRAR su oposicon....(or presentar, entablar, etc. rather than "archivar")? Sorry to ask again. Thanks in advance for your responses. M.Casique

@Asker I have never seen or heard the expression "file in a complaint".

"file a complaint" (without 'in') is (as per the answers so far): 'demandar' or 'presentar/entablar/interponer una demanda' (or other standard expressions, depending on the country; eg: in Chile the usual expression is ingresar una demanda).

But 'file IN a complaint' is ... meaningless.

If you're sure that's the expression, please provide an example in context (= full sentence or paragraph).

demandar / presentar una demanda

En términos jurídicos el verbo to file indica que se presenta en el juzgado una demanda contra algo/alguien
