Danger of over-interpretation It's easy for us to sit here and say the source text is 'wrong', but of course we don't have the full context, nor do we know what was in the writer's mind.

I think therefore that while all this technical speculation may help inform the translator's choice, ultimately, no assumptions should be made over and above what is written in the source text; if it remains untranslateable, then asking the client is the only proper course of action.

I've had exactly this situation in the job I've been working on today; I have had to write an extremely lengthy translator's note to explain to the (non-technical) PM just what the highly technical problem is with the source text.

Agree with Meirs and Tony. What about: "The regulation ramp rate limit can be set to avoid tracking fast power transients." as interpretation?

Even more than a bit Something is missing engineering-wise - maybe the ramp rate limit helps to avoid/prevent the tacking of fast power transients. In other words, the ramp-rate of the generator exciter control is limited (max dV/dT) so it may not follow fast transients.

Sounds a bit odd? I'm not quite sure I follow this, sounds like an error in the source text. I'd have expected it to read "...to avoid tracking fast power transients"

I think it eneds to be read as 'to avoid tracking', with 'fast power transients' as the direct object of 'tracking'.
