French term

adaptateur TNT

French to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng
"Avant janvier 2008, les téléviseurs n'intégraient pas obligatoirement un adaptateur TNT."

This is a text about converting TVs to digital TV.

I found "DTA adaptor" but am not sure if this is the correct translation for "adaptateur TNT."

I also found "DTV" and DTTV". Would "DTV adapter" or "DTTV adapter" be more accurate, or could either be used?

Your help with this urgent matter would be appreciated!

Discussion

Jane Golding (asker) Mar 28, 2011:
Is a DTA adapter in fact the same thing as a DTV adapter?
Jane Golding (asker) Mar 28, 2011:
Sorry, it's adaptateur TNT, not adapteur as I put in the title.

DTTV adaptor

neutral Tony M : May be a bit too general, since that could apply to all sorts of other devices too.

DTV decoder

Although strictly speaking it ought to be 'adaptor', there is a tendency I've noticed to use the word 'decoder' (even though that is to some extent technically less accurate) — probably because satellite set-top boxes have traditionally been called 'decoders' in the UK, there being no potential confusion with Canal + decoders as there would have been in France.

No, not quite the same as 'DTA'.

As far as I can quickly ascertain, 'DTA' seems to be a US term for something perhaps similar, but not neceesarily exactly the same; I think it probably depends where your readership is likely to be located, but I would advise against it for an EU readership, and if for the US, then i would suggest further research to confirm.

digital tuner

By abuse of language, "decoder" and "tuner" can be said to be synonymous in the sense that each receives electromagnetic waves out of the aether, processes the signal, and outputs it in a form which can be displayed or heard.
"Decoder" is commonly used for external units such as Sky-boxes and other satellite systems, whereas it is my impression that the word "tuner" is more widely used for the circuitry incorporated within a digital TV.

It rather depends who the readership is. If it's quite technical, then put it all in: Digital Terrestrial TV, ie DTTV. If it isn't then the readers of the equivalent of the Radio Times couldn't care less for acronyms, and all would understand what was meant by a "digital tuner".
