Katharina Leipp (asker) Jan 27, 2011:
Thanks Stephen. In fact this is a company which on the one hand produces automotive parts and on the other designes and builds machines and tools. The present case concerns a crimping machine they want to sell.
Richard Stephen Jan 27, 2011:
@ Katharina If the ginding machine they are using is from 'Göckel' or 'Diskus' you should definitely use 'Reference run', because that's what I've always used in the translations!
Katharina Leipp (asker) Jan 27, 2011:
Hallo Bernd, danke für den Hinweis. Das habe ich völlig übersehen! Passiert künftig nicht mehr.
Richard Stephen Jan 27, 2011:
Yeah, definitely machine tools!
Bernd Runge Jan 27, 2011:
Fachgebiet Hallo Katharina, mittlerweile sollte dir schon aufgefallen sein, dass diese (und andere) Frage(n) nicht in den Bereich Automotive gehören, sondern eher mit Werkzeugmaschinen zu tun haben.

reference run

This is a rather difficult term. I've run into similar terms with grinding machines, where it has usually been translated with referencing or reference run - at least this is what the manufacturer has called it in the machine programming.
You can also reword e.g. "Before starting a motion, it is necessary to move the machine to the home position".
Note from asker:
Rewording sounds good! Thanks a lot and sorry for entering this question into the wrong field. I am translating this user manual for an automotive company but you are right of course, this concerns machine tool. I will certainly pay more attention to this in the future.
Peer comment(s):

agree Bernd Runge : I like the home-position-rewording option better.//In this case, disregard everything after Good Morning and stay with 'reference something' ;-)

Thanx Bernd - Rewording stays closer to the German. In my texts they usually have a program box that says "Reference" (or something like that) followed by a description below the box. In such cases it's almost imperative to use the term in the box.
