français term

son artère aorte s’était pliée

français vers anglais Médecine Médecine : cardiologie disease of the aorta (in a biography)

I'm not convinced by "folded aorta" - it gets virtually no g-hits - and am wondering what the correct term would be here. For what it's worth, the patient had had two coronary bypasses a couple of years previously

Please note that this is a biography rather than a medical text, so the common term is probably what I'm looking for.

I'd be most grateful for help with this - many thanks!

And whatever you call it, it sounds pretty ghastly!
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Jan 18, 2011:
kinky hearts...?! As you point out in your post Carol, this is a biography, not a medical textbook. Sing the song the way it's written!
Carol Gullidge (asker) Jan 18, 2011:
sounds like bleeding within the heart! but thanks for the input! I agree that it doesn't make much sense, and am thanking my lucky stars that the author hasn't had too much recourse to medical detail in this text. This is only a very small part of the biography... Nevertheless, in the light of your comment, I ought perhaps to highlight this for the Editor - although as the book has already been published in French, it may be best to keep mum!
SJLD Jan 18, 2011:
A kink in the aorta won't cause an "intracardiac haemorrhage", whatever that is. There is no "correct" translation for this text since it is total nonsense from a medical point of view. Just go for literal.
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Jan 18, 2011:
;-) There are a few cases of congenital heart malformation in my family, including coarctations. A kink is sometimes referred to as a pseudo coarctation. If you get really keen, have a look at slide 63 and after on this link : www.meddean.luc.edu/.../Congenital Aortic Arch.ppt
Carol Gullidge (asker) Jan 18, 2011:
thanks Nikki! for the clarification re coarctation! I found that somewhere as a synonym of "kink", but will avoid using it!

As you say, it's funny how the inspiration can suddenly hit you a propos of absolutely nothing, when you're doing something quite unrelated...!
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Jan 18, 2011:
Kink "Kink" has a good ring to it in context. I think we all know what you mean about not finding a particular word. You get on with other things and the brain keeps it on the back burner. The answer seems to come out of the blue!
Note that kink is not the same as a coarcation, which is a narrowing of the aorta.
Carol Gullidge (asker) Jan 18, 2011:
thanks both of you! after pondering over this most of last night, the answer came in a flash soon after posting this question! This sometimes happens - such is the power of concentrating one's thoughts in order to post the question!

Clearly, the patient had a "kink in the aorta", or coarctation

many thanks for the help, Carmen! I think the term I'm looking for is "kink"

or aortic dissection too

Note from asker:
many thanks Drmanu! I don't think this was actually an aneurism or rupture, but merely a kink.
