French term

broche anglaise

French to English Other Cooking / Culinary Roaster brochure
This is in the La Cornue brochure on their Flamberge roaster, and is an item listed among the accessories. It's clear from Google image what a broche anglaise is, but what do the English call it? A French spit perhaps?

Discussion

claude-andrew (asker) Jan 6, 2011:
Thanks again to all. I watched the la Cornue video and followed up all yourlinks - even La Cornue have 2 terms (at least), "English style rod" as found by Rachel, and "Spit with a clamp", mentioned on their video. I've now dispatched the doc using the term "basket spit", and I'll be giving the points to the first among you to use the word "basket" (I think that's you, Wendy?)
philgoddard Jan 6, 2011:
Yes, I think inventing a term is a good idea. As long as people can understand what it means, it doesn't matter what you call it - and you'll probably find different manufacturers give it different names.
claude-andrew (asker) Jan 6, 2011:
Oh, and yes, Phil - the lacornue link does indeed show a fish in a broche anglaise.
claude-andrew (asker) Jan 6, 2011:
Thanks for all your responses. I think I'll have to invent a term, inspired by what you've suggested: a "basket spit" (that seems to describe what I see on google). The "Rotisserie" as far as I can see refers to the whole appliance (also called "Rotissoire"). Right before the term "broche anglaise" there is "broche plate", so I do need something rather specific.
philgoddard Jan 6, 2011:
I don't know if this is what you're translating, but on this page (where a broche anglaise is listed as an accessory), the picture shows it being used to hold a piece of fish:

claude-andrew (asker) Jan 6, 2011:
Indeed I have Phil - nothing there to help. Yes, it does look like a sausage holder.
philgoddard Jan 6, 2011:
Just going by Google images, it looks like a sausage holder. Have you looked at their English website?

spit (roasting) basket

The idea is that the grilled food is contained within a basket, which is then roasted as it would be on a normal spit.

neutral philgoddard : The spit roaster is the whole thing. We're looking for one of the accessories that comes with it.

Yes, well unjtil I introduced the word 'spit roaster' into the debate, the nearest we'd got was 'sausage holder'.Which is probably a device with a filter at the end through which you suck the sausage meat out of its skin, like with a cigarette holder.

(fish) grill(ing) basket

This is the name given to the object on Phil's page. You will find a variety of baskets on the link below.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Sarah Bessioud : The items listed on your link refer to baskets used for grilling or for BBQs, not for the type of rotisserie that Asker mentions. IMO I believe the word spit needs to be included to differentiate between these tyo very different uses.

So, "flat basket on a spit"? Isn't that what the autochtonous peoples of Africa and Polynesia used to say of missionaries in the 19th century? Oh no, that was "fat bastard".
