I am translating a website in which they are talking about sponsoring a fencing club for the Olympics and also supporting them with training costs incl. Vergleichswettkaempfe in the run up to 2012. Any ideas? Could this be interclub competitions?

Simply occured to me! Lots of Google hits, and the phrase seems to be in common use in both computer software and sport.

Just an educated guess...
a friendly as distinct from an official competition where more is at stake. The main purpose of a Vergleichswettkampf seems to be practice/giving juniors a chance to compete/providing a basis for comparing sportspeople so teams can be selected. Google gives close to 4500 results for "friendly competitions" and fencing, and I'm reasonably confident that Freundschaftswettbewerbe and Vergleichskämpfe are more or less synonyms. In the text in the second link, both terms are used to describe the same competition.
I imagine "Vergleichswettkampf" isn't translated very often because sports coverage focuses on more important competitions. I certainly havn't found too many webpages where it is translated convincingly.

: I'd have thought there's a diff. between Freundschaftsspiel/-kampf and Vergleichskampf. In other sports, the teams in "friendlies" are often leagues/worlds apart. Can't comment on fencing.
