German term

Zusatzmenü

German to English Tech/Engineering Computers: Software Microsoft Internet Explorer 8
This is the menu in Internet Explorer 8 on the top right of the menu bar, that contains the home page, RSS feeds, e-mail and print icons, and the Page, Safety and Tools drop-down menu. I've looked at the various IE8 help pages but can't find what this menu is actually called in English - does anyone know?

Discussion

phillee Dec 11, 2010:
The Command bar is not on the right of Menu Bar but the right of the Tab Bar, but that is another discussion ;-) Why not resort to that old favourite, the brackets: "... additional menu ('Command Bar')".
"new menu"or "newly added menu" might also fit.
philgoddard Dec 10, 2010:
I think you're right. The author has chosen their own name for it, and the answer to your question is "additional menu", unless you want to be interventionist in your translation and call it the command bar.
Louise Gough (asker) Dec 10, 2010:
I was just describing how it appears on my own version of IE8, which replicates the diagram in the German source text! Here is the German. It's possible this isn't a Microsoft term at all, just the author describing it as an "additional menu".

"Wie sieht das neue Zusatzmenü aus?
Das Zusatzmenü befindet sich nun auf der rechten Seite der Menüleiste und enthält folgenden Punkte: " (followed by the diagram as described above.)

"Extras" is mostly ... ... a translation of "Tools" in this context I believe, and that should be the case here as well. But I'm confused by your description of the individual elements. What are you referring to here?

I'm no expert, but it's not really a menu, is it? It's just a collection of icons.
Despite your helpful description, it would still be useful to have the German.

Command bar

When I choose to hide the "Command Bar" under "View Toolbars", these are precisely the icons that disappear: Home, RSS, Print, Email..
So I guess that's it.

...and of course, the Page, Safety and Tools drop downs as well.
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : This sounds right, but there is a word Befehlsleiste. That's why I think the context would be useful.

I see what you mean.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks - this is clearly what the text is referring to though not actually a translation, especially as it is a toolbar rather than a menu. I've incorporated Phil's / philee's suggestion to incorporate the term into the translation but use "additional menu" for the actual term."
