option date
the date is fixed, the testing is optional
the "option date" is the date when the option can be excersised or not
an option date seems to be a date when you have an option to do something or not to do something or do two (or more) different things
compare:
Option Date
The Option Date is the date when your savings term comes to an end and will be selected at the beginning of your plan.
On the Option Date you will have the following choices:
• Make the plan 'paid up'
• Surrender the plan without penalty and take the
unit value in cash.

There is an “Option Date” after 10 years where I can take 50% of the sum assured plus bonuses added. The sum assured is £20,880. My last statement from them says the Total Benefit to 2006 is £22,735.40p

All bookings will be regarded as provisional until a signed copy of these Terms & Conditions has been received from the client, along with a non-refundable deposit for the required services (as set out in Clause 2.4 below), and only if accepted by IWO will the booking be confirmed. IWO is not under any obligation to continue holding provisional bookings beyond the given option date (usually 10 working days from the time of booking), if these have not been received. For the purposes of this Agreement “working days” shall mean Monday to Friday inclusive.

optional date
An optional date is given for inspection or testing of the products prior to their being made available for collection. The client or purchaser may or may not exercise his option to inspect on that date. In other words, inspection is not obligatory.

: Imho, but please correct me if I'm wrong, your explanation contradicts your answer; indeed the inspection is optional, not the date.//Perhaps Michael's best option would then be to provide a description of the term-eg the first part of your last sentence.

In my opinion, a native English speaker would simply not say "option date" in this context. As Jack has indicated, that has financial connotations. It means a fixed date on which to carry out the optional inspection, and is awkwardly drafted.
