The terms I'm struggling with are "cavo cofano povero" and "cavo cofano ricco".

The document - which overall is about preventing oil vapour from freezing inside blow-by pipes - says the bonnet cable is "ricco" if it is connected behind the engine control unit and "povero" if that connection is not there.

Connected and unconnected If the client has offered this distinction then perhaps it would be wise to use it, as it is what the client means by the term. In this case, then the term is something that the client has developed for this specific purpose and it follows that you will have to develop a term in English that fulfills that same purpose, as I said before.

Client 'clarification' Hmmm. I can't say I'm any wiser after this clarification:

La differenza tra cavo cofano ricco e povero sta nel fatto che nel povero non sono previste alcune connessioni, che sono presenti nel ricco.

Is there a concise/technically correct way of saying this in the examples I've given?

Ask client "cofano ricco" just makes no sense, I think you have to ask the client.

Bigger piece I agree that makes more sense, Jim. Here's a bigger section of the source text:

Verificare se, nei veicoli interessati, sul cavo cofano è presente la derivazione indicata nella foto (connessione posizionata dietro la CVM). Se tale connessione non è presente, si tratta di un veicolo con cavo cofano povero, quindi seguire la procedura "A". Se tale connessione è presente, si tratta di un veicolo con cavo cofano ricco, quindi seguire la procedura "B".

Can we please have a big piece of the original Italian text, because this doesn't make any sense at all. Mechanical cables have strength, diameter and so on. Fuel mixtures are povero and ricco, lean and rich, and they are vapours. Sure it isn't a throttle cable that goes under the bonnet or something? One cable opens wide for a rich mixture and the other just a little for a lean mixture.

Yes, the cable in this case is not an electrical one; it's the "cavo cofano", which I assume can only be the bonnet release cable.

Cavi? I take it this is a crank case and they're talking about 'lines' holding gaseous materials which might get condensation in them not freezing - not electrical 'cables/wires' - is this correct?

rich/poor not an option I really do not believe that this can be literally translated - most of Constantinos' references are completely off track as they are not dealing with a bonnet release cable, but with signal transmission cables, or cable knits. Here, I believe, you need to find a term that will work in the context and that in some manner fits the description that will be a part of your translation in any case. Use your abilities - any suggestion we could make is just as valuable as anything you can come up with on your own.

If it is just a difference between two cable bonnet release mechanisms, then one is simple the other complex, but the Italian terminology used is not very convincing for this interpretation.
