German term

waschmaschinenfest

German to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering Pumps

Would normally translate this as machine-washable but this doesn't make sense here. The pump in question is used in the printing industry, so I imagine regular cleaning would be necessary. Anyone know anything about cleaning pumps?

Discussion

@Hazmat - Ah, how I miss Germany :) I think this is actually referring to the fact that you can wash the pump part.
Can't imagine what noise it would make in a machine though.
I would just go for 'machine washable' as the asker suggested.

having said that ... These would seem to use the same phrase ...

Agree with HazmatG here Best to try and get the intended message across. I can't see what value "washing-machine" adds here unless it really is a well known term within the target audience.
Bernd Runge Oct 10, 2010:
Es gibt schon eine Übersetzung, die allerdings "All parts of the PAB models are washing machine-proof." verwendet.
Patricia Will (asker) Oct 10, 2010:
washing machine approved We are not talking here about washing machine pumps. These are pumps used for inks, paints etc. I am trying to avoid the term washing machine because this suggests to me a domestic laundry appliance, the same is true of "machine-washable".
Patricia Will (asker) Oct 10, 2010:
Yes, I can imagine that pumps used for ink would need very thorough and regular cleaning, the text does say that the drive can be disconnected from the pump for ease of cleaning, so it is possible that some parts can be cleaned in some kind of "washing system". I have come across the term "soak tank" in conjunction with ink pumps but this is not really a Waschmaschine, is it?

Washing machine approved/ Approved fit for use in washing machines

All PAB components have been approved for use in washing machines (in addition to whatever else they have been approved for use in)
Note from asker:
These are definitely pumps for the printing industry, not for use in domestic washing machines.
Peer comment(s):

agree gangels (X) : Seem to talk about transmission belts or similar, not metal parts

yes, exactly.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Andrew Bramhall : That would surely only apply to items being washed in it, e.g, delicates that may not be suitable for machine washing.

can be machine-cleaned

I think it is best to avoid "washing machine" as it is understood as a domestic appliance in English. I think it is an industrial cleaning machine here.
Note from asker:
I think this is probably what is meant, but an industrial cleaner that uses water. Still waiting on feedback from customer.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Derek Ferrari-Frankland (X) : It specifically says waschmaschine. This means washing and not cleaning. Sand blasting is also machine cleaning but I'm sure that is not intended here.

The same terms applies to components that can be washed by modern rotational and spray wash machines.
