agree	John Bowden : the rule is: if the stress is on the first syllable, the consonant isn't doubled (e.g. benefit - benefited: but permit - permitted). However, many (most?) people ignore or don't know this rule, so it's another example of a rule that's becoming redundant 2 days 8 hrs
