four foot OR ballast

the massicciata is the part in the middle of the two tracks on a railway line. It is normally filled with ballast (on railway lines) and hence the words massi. In UK it is called 4 foot as the distance was exactle four feet. In reality the distance today is 1435mm but in the old days the tracks had a narrow gauge.
