Another translator suggested that it might be "Délat." for "délation". What do you think of this? Since it's a different word, I posted a new question, too. I hope that's OK.

Thanks for the info, Tony. Since I don't have a separate website the easiest thing I could think of was to post it as my resume on my profile. Strange, I know. I tried to paste an image into the work samples rubric, but it wouldn't let me. Thanks very much for checking it out.

If you can host your images on a site somewhere, you can post a link to them here.

If you use ProZ.com hosting, then it's easy enough to do it via that; even if you don't, there are other image hosting sites around that you can use, often free — and if all else fails, feel free to send me the image(s), and I'll post them for you on my own ProZ.com site.

It's not outside the realm of possibilities, but it doesn't entirely fit because the entry is for the initial filing of the lawsuit. So the defendant has not yet received notification of the suit. But the clerk might be using the term in a slightly different sense. Thanks for the idea - I'm keeping it in mind.

D'une manière général une personne défaillante est celle qui n'a pas exécuté ses obligations. Les mots "faillite" et "failli" dérivent de la même racine.

En procédure une personne défaillante est celle qui, bien que régulièrement assignée à comparaître devant une juridiction, ne se présente ni en personne, ni par mandataire. On dit qu'"elle a fait défaut". Le défendeur qui ayant été touché en personne par la citation et qui ne s'est pas présenté, peut faire opposition au jugement ou à l'arrêt rendu contre lui. A noter que, cette faculté n'est accordée qu'au défendeur, pas au demandeur à qui il incombe de surveiller l'état de la procédure qu'il a engagé et qui, s'il ne comparaît pas est censé y avoir renoncé.
