Danish term

Amagerbrug

Danish to English Other Agriculture
In connection with a translation concerning varioius associations, including 'Museum Amager', I have encountered the term 'Amagerbrug'. As far as I can make out (without much more context to go on), this refers to a type of agricullture previously practised on the Island of Amager located adjacent to Copenhagen. (I have tried Googling the term but am not much the wiser).

Could it possibly be translated as 'Amager smallholdings' or is there a term in English, which better conveys the meaning of the word?

Discussion

Michael Davies (asker) May 28, 2010:
Thanks to Christine and Anna Thank you for your suggestions. I have decided to solve the problem by retaining 'Amagerbrug' in the translated text with a brief explanation in brackets: "(a form of market garden or smallholding providing fruit and vegetables to Copenhagen)".

growing vegetables/vegetable plots

There was a colony of farmers and market gardeners of Dutch descent who grew vegetables and sold them to the citizens of Copenhagen. (were the Dutch originally brought over by Christian 4 in connection with building projects?)
They grew cauliflowers, peas and other vegetables, as well as fruit, I believe, to supplement the monotonous Danish diet they were offered of rye, barley and pork, and later made a living selling the produce.
One of their famous descendants was Dirch Passer.

Amager farm(s)

Since the term is unique to Amager and your text is about Amager, I think it would be safe to construct an English equivalent (as you suggested and as others have done before according to Google). The Dutch farmers were actually invited to Denmark to grow vegetables for the Danish court and Copenhagen because of their superior farming skills (first link). Or you could rewrite and use the term 'Amager farmers' (second link).
