Wallrathslichterfabrik
German to English
Tech/Engineering
Manufacturing
historical business
Schwerin had one of these in the mid-19th century. An encyclopaedia entry of that period about Schwerin includes: "Schwerin hat mancherlei Industrie, besonders gute Handwerker ---. 1 Tuchmanufactur mit 123 Arbeitern, 2 Lackfabriken, 1 Wallrathslichterfabrik, 1 Strohhutfabrik, ...". I can't find this word anywhere. Any ideas?

Spermaceti (from Greek sperma, seed, and Latin cetus, whale) sometimes erroneously called parmaceti is a wax present in the head cavities of the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus).
The substance was also used in making candles of a standard photometric value, in the dressing of fabrics, and as a pharmaceutical excipient, especially in cerates and ointments.

Example:
Nantucket Whaling Museum
This museum is housed in an 1846 refinery and spermaceti candle factory. The then-prized spermaceti is the oil found in the sperm whale’s head, which was used as lamp oil and machine oil.

Following a bit of research it seems that another spelling for Wallrath is Walrat which in English is spermaceti a type of solid wax found in the head of the sperm whale.
According to Grimm's dictionary "Walratlicht" is the same as "Walratkerze"
