Discussion

Brian Young Apr 10, 2010:
Good input We learn something new everyday. Thanks! I never heard of this before. But it sure could have been written better. "for laering---"?
Charles Ek Apr 10, 2010:
Danish, with a side order of duck :-) It is indeed a semi-respectable Danish term -- see my discussion below. Donald and the boys enjoy much wider popularity in Scandinavia than we see over here.
Brian Young Apr 10, 2010:
Danish? This is not Danish. Is it actually written this way? Was it written by a Dane? Even if you put in what the obvious Danish letters would be, it is still a horrendous text. I hope someone has an answer for you.

field guide

IMO, there's a reason your source has chosen "grønspættebog" instead of the usual suspects. It has to do with the implied content of what we in America might call a "field guide" in this context. I refer to the implication that such a resource has practical, ready-to-use and accessible answers for real life problems. See the reference link below for examples from a Google search for "field guide" + "leadership".

For the Danish origin, see http://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grønspættebogen. The English origin of the Danish term goes back of course to the Junior Woodchucks: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_Woodchucks_Guidebook.

Using just "manual" here strikes me as inadequate for what the writer is trying to convey.
