garden

English to Latin Art/Literary Agriculture Cicero
"If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need."

Sorry, the fields are slightly off, but there's no gardening or library category. It's been nearly 40 years, but this comment occurred to me when writing to a friend who has had some ups and downs but has just moved and is starting a new chapter in her life. I knew it was Cicero because my enthusiastic Latin teacher emphasized him, but despite searching in Google in various ways and seeing that the quote is often used by garden-related companies, I can't find the source or the Latin. So I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.
Many thanks in advance,
Terry

English term (edited): If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need

Si hortum in bibliotheca habes, deerit nihil

I believe you wanted the translation of the whole phrase, not just the word 'garden'. The phrase is from Cicero, Epistulae ad familiares 9.4.1 (a letter from Cicero to Varro). It actually means "if you have a garden IN the library ..."

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Yes, I was looking for the whole quote and its source. Thank you! It is very interesting that it's about having a garden *in* your library! A different slant than the one I remembered, but also true in its way. "
