German term

Ersatzweise spreche ich gleichzeitig die fristgerechte Kuendigung aus.

German to English Bus/Financial Human Resources
This is from a letter of dismissal I am translating. I don't understand it as before and after it says that the employee is dismissed with immediate effect. But the above sentence seems to contradict this.

If, for any reason, the dismissal with immediate effect is invalid ...

...

My guess is that this is just a "safety net": In case the dismissal with immediate effect is invalid for some (legal) reason, the employee is given notice as provided for in his/her contract or mandated by applicable law.

The above is my attempt at a start to the sentence.

Here's a reference to support my theory:

"Der ersatzweise gemachte Zusatz gilt für den Fall, dass die außerordentliche Kündigung unwirksam sein sollte. Insoweit kommt aufgrund des Zusatzes dann eine ordentliche Kündigung in Betracht. "

... then this dismissal shall be construed to take effect ...

... at the end of the contractually mandated notice period, which shall begin upon receipt of this letter.

OK, these aren't translations of the text, but they convey the intended meaning.

A more literal translation: Alternatively, this letter shall constitute notice of the begin of the contractually required notice period for dismissal.
