latrán

Czech to English Tech/Engineering Architecture
Hi there history and architecture buffs! Here's one for you, not too hard to track down what it means, but where's the English equivalent?
From sentence: Součástí areálu bylo i předhradí a ulicový latrán, typický pro rožmberská sídla.
thanks!

Discussion

Sarka Rubkova Dec 19, 2009:
The definition of latrán is much more complicated than in Maria's entry. The scientific definition is as follows: Latrán je mezní formou obsahující některé charakteristické prvky předhradí (opevnění navazující k jádru hradu, vazba na
přístupovou cestu) i podhradí (primární sídelní funkce) (see http://is.muni.cz/th/41742/ff_m/AEmgr1.txt). However it seems that it is specific for castles of noble families but not for royal castles. It also seems that even scientists have difficuties when distiguishing předhradí, podhradí and latrán.
Maria Chmelarova Dec 18, 2009:
Igor Liba Dec 18, 2009:
latrán - ulicový útvar, přihrazený k boku hradu (název z latinského latus, 2. pád lateris, bok) a tvořený domky řemeslníků a hradní čeledi. Typický pro jihočeské rožmberské hrady. (V Českém Krumlově se vyvinul v samostatnou městskou část s vlastní radnicí).

I have no idea but... try asking at the CzechEd forum at yahoogroups - the owner, Alastair Millar, is both a translator and archeologist by education.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I had some clarification from the editor and latrán and podhradí are nearly one in the same...with latrán specifically with a typical street system...that's why I chose this answer, thanks to all for a nicely developed debate.."

baileys

Due to the fact that latrán is defined by Czech historicians either as předhradí (baileys) or podhradí (extramural settlement) you can make your choice. However, latrán can be also the street leading to the castle gates.
Peer comment(s):

agree Maria Chmelarova : with bailey
