Thanks for your suggestion, Tom. I had thought of get-togethers as well, but it still doesn't seem to fit the context - especially when referred to gare in the sentence numero di gare della riunione - number of get-together competitions? It doesn't make any sense, does it? I'm in a right quandary over this!
