German term

Spindeln

German to English Tech/Engineering Architecture
This term occurs in a description of the design of a car park.

Die Garage baut sich über 3 Ebenen auf und bildet vor allem nach Norden den Sockel der XXX [name of building]. Die ca. 2000 Stellplätze pro Ebene sind über Spindeln miteinander verbunden.

Maybe it is the construction of the sentence that is confusing me: the parking places are linked? The different levels of the car park? I would have thought the latter. And I am wondering whether a correct translation would be tie-rods. I'd be grateful for any assistance from anyone who has come across this term in a similar context before.

Thank you That is excellent help, charissma!

Sorry that I couldn't be of more help.
Helen Shiner (asker) Oct 10, 2009:
Hi charissma I think your last entry must be right - now to find the EN for that...
T-janaK Oct 10, 2009:
And I've just found a technical synonyme for it: zylindrischer Mittelteil der Wendeltreppe ...
T-janaK Oct 10, 2009:
Hi Helen, Normally "Spindel" is beeing uses as the word when you spin wool, like in the fairy tale of "Dornröschen" (Sleeping Beauty). I've actually never heard the word in the contents of a staircase or drive way. I just thought it would make the most sense when you speak of the different levels of the car park. If the meaning is a connection between the parking places it could be "Spindel" as a part of the banister.
Helen Shiner (asker) Oct 10, 2009:
Hi charissma Newel, I think, is approximately spindle in EN, part of the banister of a staircase. Do you think that Spindel in this case might be being used as a spiral staircase in its own right?

spiral ramps/circular ramps

I think this refers to the spiral ramps/circular ramps in multi-storey car parks. The German term "Parkhausspindel" corresponds to the English "spiral ramps to a multi-storey car park" or "circular parking ramp".

Take a look at the following images:

newel (of spiral staircase)

I also think it concerns the levels and not the places. I think "Spindel" means in this case a kind of spiral drive way between the levels of the parking garage. Although "Spindel" is not a very common word in German for this meaning.
