German term

Vielfalt unter einem Dach

German to English Marketing Marketing Werbung
This is the subtitle of an image video about a publishing house. Their products range from magazines on farm machinery, pig rearing, dairy cows, horse keeping to hunting, beef fattening and gardening as well as country life to an Internet machinery trading platform. In addition, they publish a Polish magazine, an English and one Russian mag. On top of that they not only publish print material but also DVDs such as the David/Goliath thing.
All in all they publish more than 30 different magazines, each covering a different aspect of life in the country.
All this is what "Vielfalt" rerfers to. "Unter einem Dach" then means "from one publisher".

Discussion

trans-agrar (asker) Oct 12, 2009:
Gateway to variety After more contributions (many thanks for these) I have come up with the above. Your comments on this are much appreciated.
Anne-Marie Grant (X) Oct 9, 2009:
The slight problem I have with 'diversity' is that it is now so often used in the context of race and gender politics etc - making sure that everyone is represented.
writeaway Oct 9, 2009:
That does exist. Why not? Check it out on the www. It could work in your context.
trans-agrar (asker) Oct 9, 2009:
How about "Diversity under one roof" then?
writeaway Oct 9, 2009:
Thank you!! Fwiw, I don't agree with your En colleague. I don't find Alice's solution particularly theatrical-it's more or less standard. The only theatrical aspect may be 'everything'. That covers a lot more than books, magazine and DVDs.
trans-agrar (asker) Oct 9, 2009:
Well, I have been brainstorming with "diversity, diverse" and something like "one source/one publisher". Something like "Diversity in unity" allthough that's not quite it. An English colleague came up with Alice's solution before I started this discussion here, but he finds it rather theatrical.
The subtitle is the subtitle to the pubslisher's logo.
writeaway Oct 9, 2009:
What do you have so far? To avoid people coming up with suggestions you've already rejected, please let colleagues know what you've thought of so far.

neutral Lancashireman : @ writeaway: This may well have been the option that transagrar's EN colleague thought more appropriate for a theatre.

Everything under one roof

I'm not sure what I should write here. The term "Vielfalt unter einem Dach" has always meant everything under one roof. Your explanation of the publishing house providing such an extensive, or "diverse i.e. vielfalt" rather, group of reading materials from one source, only goes to support my statement. The publisher has many diverse materials in one location, under one roof - "Everything under one roof.
Peer comment(s):

agree Helen Shiner : Yes, this is the famous slogan used by department stores, but it fits well here

disagree Lancashireman : Except that the readers are unlikely to be interested by whether the publisher operates from one site or several. I think the reference to ‘unter einem Dach’ is out of place here. More important to focus on ‘Vielfalt’.// Too literal. It just doesn't work

Do you disagree with my translation or the phrase unter einem Dach? I don't understand the purpose of your comment? Do you have a problem with the expression, yet you've disagreed with my translation? Please be clear when critiquing my work negatively.

A world of material in one place

Or 'A world of reading' if you discount the DVDs!

This suggests abundance and the fact that other languages are represented.

@Barbara - that could work. If you use media you can also keep 'under one roof'. I didn't suggest it as 'A world of materials under one roof' sounds like you're discussing loft insulation or some such. Perhaps 'A world of media under one roof'. No doubt others will wish to comment though.

In light of your explanation about 'unter einem Dach' - in one place or, as Steffen suggest, from a single source could work.
Note from asker:
This seems to be on a good track. Considering that they call their products "media" - how about "A world of media in one place"? Any comment is much appreciated. Thanks Barbara
Peer comment(s):

agree Steffen Walter : How about a combination: "A world of media - from a single source?"?

Thanks, Steffen - I think that's a good suggestion
neutral Lancashireman : Not 'in one place' unless the readers have to drive to this publishing house (with its legendary voluminous roof) to pick up copies of their favourite magazine.

Yes. Steffen's suggestion is better.

One publisher - gateway to a media world

Maybe this type of thing?
Note from asker:
Hi Bianca, thanks for this. Could we also say "Gateway to a world of media"? Thanks Barbara
