Spanish term (edited):
la falta de noticias históricas
Selected
an absence of trustworthy news
It is debatable here as to whether "historicas" means "verifiable/trustworthy" or "relevant/important." My vote would be for the former on logical grounds: Otherwise the text would be saying that nothing important was going on in the society where the people lived, and this would be an odd assertion indeed.
The whole thing, then, would be:
=
discussion of current events in a society in which an absence of trustworthy news inevitably led to rumors and gossip.
"Hacen brotar" clearly conveys a sense of natural cause/effect, hence "inevitably.
Suerte.

I think históricas here refers to memorable or relevant news
gossip flourished in the absence of more important news (to report)
gossip flourished in the absence of more important news (to report)
