1 - 'If only Ram were to come!' and 'If only Ram had come!

In the first sentence the use of the word 'kaash' does not seem grammatically correct in Hindi. 'Kaash' is used to denote a regret for something that did not happen; it is not used for something that there is still a chance of happening.
In the second sentence, it denotes regret at something that did not happen, a sense that things would have been different 'if only.... Ram had come' However, the punctuation would be an exclamation mark at the end and not a question mark.
Peer comment(s):

agree Ramesh Bhatt : Kaash doesn't convey a regret only, it conveys a yearning as well.

Thank you! And for pointing out the other meaning. 'Kaash' conveys wistful yearning as no other word can!

Thank you! Yes, 'Alas!' is a very evocative word which conveys regret for something that did not come to pass, especially in the sense where even hope is gone and the loss is irrepairable.

Thank you very much! Yes, I too haven't found any isotope or isobar to "Kaash". And our reciprocity--that is an excellent introduction of each other. I look forward to writing you a Persian idiom in this regard.
