German term

grafische/gestalterische Möglichkeiten

German to English Art/Literary Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts) Corporate design
Context:
Es werden bewährte Elemente beibehalten, die grafischen Ausdrucksformen und -möglichkeiten jedoch zugleich erheblich erweitert. ... Diese Muster zeigen die ganze Bandbreite der gestalterischen Möglichkeiten.

I guess "grafische Möglichkeiten" and "gestalterischen Möglichkeiten" are essentially synonymous, aren't they? I don't really like "graphic options" or "design options" (especially not of the corporate design) and am thinking along the lines of:
"the forms and options for graphic expression" and "the entire spectrum of the new design".

visual/creative modes/possibilities

My stab:

"forms and modes of visual expression" and "entire range of creative possibilities"

"Modes" was the only relative of "options" I could think of that would take "of" as a preposition, for symmetry with "forms of expression." And "visual expression" sounds a little more natural to me than "graphic expression," though I probably wouldn't stumble over "graphic expression" either, to be honest.
Peer comment(s):

agree Helen Shiner : I like your 'forms and modes', but the addition of 'visual' or 'creative' is for me taking it too far away from the source text. 'Graphic expression' is quite natural in this field.

agree Annett Kottek (X) : This product sounds like something that would allow the user to personalize its appearance/layout, hence 'creative possibilities' for 'gestalterische Möglichkeiten'.

graphic / design possibilities

grafische Ausdrucksformen = graphic design possibilities
gestalterische Möglichkeiten = design / creative possibilties
My suggestions shortens that a bit.

neutral Helen Shiner : er, haven't I already suggested this?

some solutions

I think your 'forms and options for graphic expression' is absolutely fine. For the second instance, I would suggest

'the entire spectrum of design possibilities' or indeed 'design options'. I agree 'graphic options sounds a little odd, but 'design options' sounds fine to me. Design solutions is also a possibility.

@ Andrew - I can't imagine the circumstances where Konstruktion, Konzeption or Ausführung would be translated as 'design'. Entwurf and Gestaltung, dependent on the context, yes.

Hi David - I guess so, dependent on the context, though obviously not as an adjective, such as in 'designing options'.
Note from asker:
Many thanks! For 'gestalten' in graphic design one could also propose 'designing', just to distinguish it from 'design'?
Peer comment(s):

agree Patrick Hubenthal : I'm not a fan of "forms ... for graphic expression" because of the preposition, as noted in my answer, but ooh, "design options" -- can't believe I didn't think of that!

Yes, I agree, 'forms of' is far better, so maybe reworking the sentence a little is better. Thanks, Patrick.
neutral Lancashireman : Let’s hope that the rest of the paragraph isn’t packed out with Entwurf, Gestaltung, Ausführung, Konstruktion, Konzeption etc, not to mention that classic German word ‘Design’. The options quickly start to run out. // Erm, 'design'?

Well, that is for David to work out, if such is the case. We can only work with the context we are given. We do use 'design' in a multiplicity of ways; there is little that can be done about that. What would you propose for 'gestalten' in graphic design?

German term (edited): grafische/gestalterischen Möglichkeiten

graphical / design possibilities

If used like this, graphische should be translated as graphical not graphic.

I might suggest, depending on the context though and the opinion of the original asker, that "options" may be a better solution than "possibilities"? Possibilities is much more vague, speculative, options would then go on to describe a list of possible choices.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Helen Shiner : No, graphic is the adjective used for 'graphic design' - not to be confused with computing.

disagree Patrick Hubenthal : I agree with Helen: "Graphical" suggests computer technology to me, not art/design.

disagree Helen Shiner : graphical is not a term used in reference to graphic design

Fair point, if its referring to graphic design. However, the / seems almost in the way? Or, graphic design / layout options?
