Danish term

der gik ry af

Danish to English Social Sciences General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
A group of school children, describing the horror of seeing their esteemed headmaster playing the role of a drunkard, write: "Der gik mellem de voksne ry af denne praestation, der nok ogsaa har vaeret talentfuld, men for os born var det en meget rystende oplevelse at se..." Most is quite clear to me, but I'm unsure of the best way to translate the first part (concerning the reaction of the adults present).

word of his performance

In this contest, I would translate it is "word of this performance, which no doubt was quite talented, quickly spread among the adults; but for us children..."

Ry actually means reputation, but I think in this context "word of his performance" might be suitable.

Good luck.

developed quite a reputation (here:) There was a lot of talk about it

'ry' is often translated with something like reputation or good name.

"This performance earned him quite a reputation among the grown ups"

"He made something of a name for hmself with this performance ..."

However, I might be tempted simply to write "There was a lot of talk about it among the grown ups, but it was a great shock to the children ..."
