Hi Claire
So in the end, which of the two versions offered did you go for? Does the girlfriend feel an urge/desire/instinct to 'nurture' or to 'nourish' this famous person?

nurturing instinct/nourishing instinct

This is something that has bothered me ever since I became a father. From the days of Sita onwards, it has always been the mother who is credited with having the nurturing, protective instinct and not the Dad. The nurturing instinct might have been restricted to the mother perhaps in pre-historic times, but in today’s very evolved world, both parents equally nurture and provide for their children. Wouldn’t you agree it is a bit unfair to laud only the mother for this very natural ‘parental’ instinct?http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/celebratingpater...
Our Nurturing Instinct motivates us to reproduce, and care for our young. It makes us constantly judge good and bad. It makes us believe in, and live by absolutes - all, none, every, always and never.

By applying that same great nourishing instinct that led you to breastfeed your baby, you will find something that works just right in your house.

If you follow your natural nourishing instinct, you definitely end up in poverty according to this system.

Actually, it's the earth that is our nourishing mother - she and the sun carry all life down here! So, what we have here is the female, nourishing instinctive complex, shared among the earth and the moon.

It is not confined to "breastfeeding"! Our Nurturing Instinct motivates us to reproduce, and care for our young and everybody we care for!

caring instinct

might be more appropriate
Peer comment(s):

neutral Lancashireman : Might be appropriate if the 'famous person' is bedridden or in a wheelchair.

a desire to mother [him]

Not as exact as Edith's, but I think this is the idea behind the phrase

e.g. women always want to mother him

maternal instinct

Women discover their maternal instinct... (when exposed to his baby face)

Or similar, I'd say.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Lancashireman : Could imply that women want the 'famous person' to sire children with them.

agree Anne-Marie Grant (X) : I think this works if you say 'he brings out their maternal instinct'.
