French term

Degré de pollution de l’environnement

French to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng Electrical product rating
"Degré de pollution de l’environnement : 2"

I though of "energy efficiency index", but the ratings are from A to G.

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): JAN SNAUWAERT

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Nikki Scott-Despaigne May 28, 2009:
"pollution rating" "Pollution rating" seems much closer... but as I say, without any more context, and with no indication as to where you obtained "energy efficiency index"... and I also fail to udnerstand the relevance of your concern over the letters rather than the numbers. Context is lacking!!!
Conor McAuley (asker) May 28, 2009:
That appears to be the "right answer".
Nikki Scott-Despaigne May 28, 2009:
Context? Morning Conor,<br>I reckon it would be good to have more context. If you are suggesting "energy efficiency index", which might be spot on, I am missing something contextual to see how you arrive at that one as a potential solution for "degré de pollution"... A biot like how do you get from CAT to DOG in four stages. I'm missing something!
Pollution is a negative thing, energy efficieny is positive, a mjor difference in point of view particulary when dealing with indexes.

What is “Pollution Degree”?
Pollution degree is a classification according to the amount of dry pollution and condensation present in the environment. This classification is important since it affects creepage and clearance distances required to insure the safety of a product. Office and laboratory areas are considered pollution degree 2 environments according to safety standards and certification bodies. Pollution degree 1 may be considered inside sealed components and within air/water tight enclosures. Pollution degree 3 is a harsher environment typical in many industrial manufacturing areas. Safety standards bodies such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and IEC [1] categorize them as follows:

Pollution Degree 1: No pollution or only dry, nonconductive pollution occurs. The pollution has no effect.

Pollution Degree 2: Normally only nonconductive pollution occurs. Temporary conductivity caused by condensation is to be expected.

Pollution Degree 3: Conductive pollution or dry nonconductive pollution that becomes conductive due to condensation occurs. To be found in industrial environment or construction sites (harsh environments).

If A to G is the scale, then level seems fine to me.

In this article, we examine the cumulative impact of state environmental protection policies and environmental quality on the health of state residents in the United States. Using a series of path analytic models, we simultaneously analyze the effect of state environmental policies on environmental pollution and healthoutcomes. Our results indicate that states with stronger environmental programs have lower levels of pollution and better public health. These results are robust across multiple measures and alternative model specifications. We also find some evidence that states that assume authority to implement federal environmental programs have worse health outcomes. Our findings suggest that overall levels of public health may be affected by state choices with respect to environmental policies and highlight the importance of assessing programmatic consequences across policy areas.

Algal indicators of environment in the Nahal Yarqon basin, Central Israel

The environmental pollution index (EPI) varies from 2 to 4 indicating a range of slightly to strongly polluted water of Class II and III. The Water Ecosystem State Index (WESI) testifies to a toxic impact on the algae in the low-water season. The River Pollution Index for saprobity (RPIs = 2.3), conductivity (RPIε = 2.02.7), nitric nitrogen (RPIN= 18), and pH (RPIpH= 7.77.8) indicate alkaline moderately mineralized waters with an occasional input of nitrates round the year, corresponding to the Class III water quality and the betamesosaprobic self-purification zone. Our results allow an estimate of self-purification capacity for the Nahal Yarqon on the basis of modern international approaches. We provide indicators for evaluation and monitoring of the river. This study shows the potentials of the algal bioindication method for aquatic ecosystems of Israel.

I stuck very closely to the original and adopted your "index" and found a fair number of original language hits which suggest that this term does indeed exist. Without more context, your "energy efficiency rating" is unclear to me...
