Patrick, I think your "lifestyle" ... ... is probably fine - judging by the hits for this specific context. And I'm not a big fan of KudoZ points at the best of times ...
Patrick Hubenthal Apr 17, 2009:
Well, personally, I think "lifestyle" is a more expansive concept that includes the nuts and bolts and doesn't necessarily have to be as lightweight as you suggest, Tony. Geschmackssache? Probably. "Life choices," however, is an option I could totally get behind in this context -- why don't you submit it as an answer and snap up a few KudoZ? Thanks, in any case, for adding it to my repertoire!
TonyTK Apr 17, 2009:
Although I still reckon that ... ... "lifetsyle" sounds a little flimsy if we're talking work-life balance and reconciling the needs of work and family life, I have to admit that it Googles quite well in this context - at least as well as "(work-)life choice". My only caveat is that I tend to think of a "lifestyle" as something one adopts to project a certain image of oneself, while the "Lebensentwurf" in your text is more about the nuts and bolts of life (the decision to have kids and the resulting need to plan one's day-to-day life accordingly).

lifestyle

This is my usual way of translating this term. Literal-minded types sometimes object that German also has "Lebensstil," and I acknowledge the difference, but in English I don't think we generally differentiate between the "life-plan" (Lebensentwurf) and its execution (Lebensstil). Another option I sometimes use is "way of life," but given the tone of your text I'd go with "lifestyle."

neutral TonyTK : My feeling is that they're talking about life choices (for want of a better expression) rather than lifestyles. IOW, early retirement, having children later rather than sooner, that kind of thing. "Lifestyle" sounds a bit lightweight in this context.
