German term

Harmonisierung des europäischen Schienenverkehrs

Non-PRO German to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping
Harmonisierung des europäischen Schienenverkehrs durch die benannte Stelle

I wonder if adaptation wouldn't sound better than harmonization????

• Adaptation of European railway traffic by the listed department

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (1): Ruxi

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Apr 6, 2009:
Please do not refrain from answering, if you can add additional points, references and/or proposals. Most Kudoz peers have no technical background and needs to be supported in technical subjects.
Johannes Gleim Apr 6, 2009:
No, I do not disqualify anybody. The first entry was correct. Only the entry "coordination" incited me to follow the question. See also my added note.
Ruxi Apr 6, 2009:
KudoZ is an unfair system itsself. So let's stop fighting, all of us. Bye.
Johannes: we are both equally good. O.K?
Ruxi Apr 6, 2009:
You are not fair. Yes, I refrain to answer KudoZ in third languages, unless I know the answer very well, but even then I know I have no chances against native groups. I need the points (I have only few), my pairs have few KudoZ and jobs but it's O.K.
Martin Wenzel (asker) Apr 6, 2009:
About fairness/unfairness @Ruxi, I don't think it's unfair because first I gave half of the answer myself, I just needed a confirmation, as a matter of fact I shouldn't even have asked it; second it is the first time that you have answered any of my questions, third Johannes normally puts a lot of effort and research in this answers and I haven't always rewarded him accordingly, and fourth I don't think that if I had given you the points it would boost your business.

Life is unfair, I try to be fair. The kudoz-award system is unfair because one cannot split points between two or several parties. You can bring this to the attention of the staff. So long, and don't sulk anymore.

Ruxi Apr 6, 2009:
It is somehow unfair the way the answer was chosen. Besides, some translators need even Kudoz points, when their language pairs bring so few jobs/clients.
Lancashireman Apr 2, 2009:
recategori*S*e for European audiences....
Martin Wenzel (asker) Apr 2, 2009:
No, David I am perfectly happy with harmonization that's the word I have been using all the time ...I think sometimes dictionaries can confuse...
@Casper....Whatever category I generally choose.... s.o. will show up wanting to recategorize the term...also whether a question is easy or professional is difficult to define at times and people tend to argue over this, too...
casper (X) Apr 2, 2009:
How is your cited text related to "Marketing - Finance (general)" ?
David Moore (X) Apr 2, 2009:
As Ruxi says, "adaptation" is not correct here; if you're not happy with "harmonisation", then please give us more context, e.g., tell us what the "benannte Stelle" is, but it certainly looks (and feels) right to me.

EUROPEAN HARMONIZATION AND INNOVATION
In order to achieve interoperability among European Rail Networks, the European Commission promoted the development and deployment of a common European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).
http://newsletter.epfl.ch/mir/newspaper-article?np_id=21&np_...

The ERTMS is designed to harmonise European signalling systems and introduce a uniform automatic speed control system, based on the latest developments in telecommunications technology.
http://www.europarl.europa.eu/parliament/expert/displayFtu.d...

Providing seamless pan-European signalling and train control is the role of ETCS - the European Train Control System. ETCS is the signalling component of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and it is central to the harmonisation of Europe's fragmented rail networks.

Translation for "Benannte Stelle":

Benannte Stellen (engl.

The 27 European Union (EU) and 3 European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states have designated, until February 2008, more than 1800 notified bodies. Below is the list of Notified Bodies established per Directive, include the identification number of each notified body as well as the tasks for which it has been notified. The lists will be subject to regular update.

@ Ruxi: I forward my reply as I no place is left after my comment.
Thank you for this piece of information. I would avoid considering "coordination". That's why I posted my answer, too. Otherwise I had agreed and posted my references under Discuss or Post references.
In regard to KudoZ points: You are right saying that Romanian is not as frequent as German, French or English and it is not so easy to got KudoZ point. But note, that the numer of points is not as important as it looks. Even I have accumulated more points since 2002 I have not really much translation orders. Perhaps as I do translate only on sidejob basis. I am sure you will have clients coming back, if satisfied by your profiency and attract new clients, either via ProZ.com or by advertising or addressing clients directly.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you to all. I used this w/o the "system" and the EU spelling..."

harmonization, coordination

I would not say adaptation, because it has another meaning.
You can adapt a rule or a thing to another one.
To harmonize means e.g to adopt the same rules, laws, notions for more states.
In this context, more states adopt the same technical features or rules for the railway.
I am not an English native, but I tried to explain the difference, as far as I know it from my experience.
Peer comment(s):

agree Anne-Marie Grant (X) : I would stick with harmonization-you hear this word a lot in reference to eg EU regulations. And yes, harmonisation for the UK
12 mins
agree David Moore (X) : harmoni*S*e for European audiences....
12 mins
agree Derek Gill Franßen
16 mins
agree Lucy Brooks : harmonise for UK English - it's certainly what I would use
46 mins
neutral Johannes Gleim : Harmonisation is right, but coordination doesn't fit. Sorry for interfering, but as former railway planner and current factory inspector for an approvals institute I should know what "Harmonisierung", "Benannte Stelle" and similar terms in English means

O.K. FYI I also worked in national transport planning and with EU harmonization in transport statistics. So we are both good. However dictionaries put the two terms as synonyms (which is not always true).
