: Yes! Personally, I think the "Stiefkind" metaphor doesn't really work, so I would not bother to use the same construction in the translation.

Well, I don't think so. It is actually colloquial English and means "neglected" and "overlooked" and not "a weak link". After all "Stiefkind der Medizin" is also pretty colloquial!
