has never attracted/received much attention

...rather than "neglected" (i.e. no attention)...
Peer comment(s):

agree Dr. Anja Masselli : Yes! Personally, I think the "Stiefkind" metaphor doesn't really work, so I would not bother to use the same construction in the translation.

agree Lirka : the idea, yes, but if we want to stick to the poetic original, we need a noun here

it is another way of conveying the same meaning...

neutral Lirka : the idea is correct of course, but it sound too much like a fairy-tale in English :)

... is seen as 'the poor relation' of medicine

The pancreas is seen as 'the poor relation' of medicine ...

It is colloquial English, but that is how I would say it.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Lirka : sounds like the "weak link"--don't think so
8 hrs
Well, I don't think so. It is actually colloquial English and means "neglected" and "overlooked" and not "a weak link". After all "Stiefkind der Medizin" is also pretty colloquial!
agree CArcher : there are actually quite a number of papers using the term "poor relation" in this context

Thank you, Claudia Archer. Yes, I have seen quite a few papers too.

the "forgotten organ" in medicine

We need a noun here, don't we?
Peer comment(s):

neutral Marga Shaw : I am sorry, but "forgotten organ in medicine" does not seem to make much sense to me. Perhaps the organ did not receive the attention it should have received, but forgotten it is not!
