: I'd say she passed the exam. Was it a three-year exam? /I'm not versant in BE education terminology, but I'd say she passed a licensing exam leading to a degree in nursing, oder so.

Hi Kim, Obviously not a three year exam but if the idea behind the course was an examination then one would have to translate" Staatsexam" as exam, otherwise it would be shown as a course, or am I off the beam here?

: Please look at your answer again! "A three year state exam" is precisely what you entered. However, it is the training course which lasts three years and not the states examination as you seem to indicate.

I am not familiar with nurse training in Germany, but in GB all successfully-completed training leads to (state) registration as a nurse and the award of either a diploma or a degree.

: In Germany you have to pass a states examination in order to register as a nurse. This is not addressed in the answer.

It's the same in the U.K. You might be right that it needs to be spelled out more explicitly than I have done in the answer.

The Staatsexamen is a German government licensing examination that future doctors, teachers, lawyers, judges, public prosecutors and pharmacists have to pass to be allowed to work in their profession. The examination is generally organized by government examination agencies which are under the authority of the responsible ministry. These agencies create examination commissions which consist of members of the examination agency, university professors and/or representatives from the professions.[1]
Students usually study at university for 4-6 years before they take the first Staatsexamen. Afterwards teachers and jurists go on to work in their future jobs in a practical phase of two to three years. Then they are allowed to take the second Staatsexamen, which amongst others tests their professional skills in their respective jobs.
The first Staatsexamen examination is at a level equivalent to a M.Sc. or M.A., while the second Staatsexamen is roughly comparable to passing the bar exam or finishing ones' residency.
Staatsexamen students can proceed to a doctorate.
