Från Barron\'s Business Guide, 2nd Ed. (Jack. P. Friedman):

Principal:

1. One who owns or will use property. For example, the principals to the lease are the landlord and the tenant; principals to a sale are the buyer and the seller.

2. One who contracts for the services of an agent or broker; the broker\'s or agent\'s client.

3. Amount of money...etc. (N/A here)

Better suggestion:

\"verkställande partner\".

Inspired by Lars Peter Linton\'s comment.
Peer comment(s):

agree Peter Linton (X) : Consultancies usually have a principal or senior partner, not a director.

styrelseordförande

Here, 'principal' is like the 'principal' (head) of a school
or university or partnership.

The ref below contains this:
Not exactly the same words as 'managing principal', but the same delägare concept - Mr Tidström is first among equals.

I think Sven Petersson\'s suggestion of \"verkställande partner\" is the closest rendering of the English.
My suggestion of \'styrelseordförande\' is not so close, but conveys the status.
