Spanish term

apostar por

Discussion

Terry Cola (X) May 12, 2011:
You could use "to back" in the sense of support or be on the same side as.

Not always,but it's another option
Mil gracias.
Lydia De Jorge Feb 11, 2009:
I suppose it's a matter of interpretation and we would have to see the rest of the context. Bea has it so it's her call. Putting your faith in something is pretty much the same as relying on it.
Mariela Diaz-Butler Feb 11, 2009:
Actually, the context does not make it evident that they are depending on golf. If anything, it says that they have put their faith (investment, maybe?) on golf because it is attractive in Spain.
Lydia De Jorge Feb 11, 2009:
I agree with Lisa, and in any case, based on the context, this is bot about betting but about relying or depending on...
Lisa McCarthy Feb 11, 2009:
Hi Bea - is this a company that specialises in golf tourism, a general tourist agency or another type of company? There is a difference between 'bet on' and 'count on' here.

to be committed to...

We are committed to...

I usually translate "apostar por/apuesta" as some kind of committment. certainly nothing to do with betting here!

No hint of risk-taking or betting in this option, which would seem advisable if the aim is to attract clients or investment.

Another possibility, depending on what kind of company it is, as LisaMac asks.

We have faith in golf...

Just another possibility.

banking on

We are banking on golf...

That's how I'd tend to say it.

suerte :)

I chose the word 'banking' for 2 reasons:

A: It is very common in business English
B: It compliments and strengthens the use of the word 'Resources' later on in the sentence, therefore improving the general tone, I believe.

Hope this helps :)

You're very welcome Bea :)) I think you made the right choice going for Neil's suggestion actually; it makes more sense now having looked at the context again from a different angle, and with the knowledge that it's for a government body. I definitely think Neil is right in that it's best to play it safe and avoid using financially-oriented terms in these times due to negative connotations (especially for government bodies). Good call!
Example sentence:

We are banking on golf...

Note from asker:
Thank you James. I like your option but I finally went for safety. Saludos - Bea
Peer comment(s):

agree Richard Boulter : This is really the most to-the-point rendition given, though it is the least literal; it is still a metaphore. One could use 'betting on' or 'gambling on' & be perfectly correct, depending on the facts of the context and the risk investors are taking
8 mins
Thanks Richard. My sentiments exactly :)
neutral neilmac : Not too bad, but in the current economic climate I'd avoid using "banking" due to negative connotations.
13 mins
Thanks Neil, I did consider the current economic climate actually, but I also thought that in the real world (outside finance) that's how people would say it, regardless of the current climate. Fair comment.

agree Terry Cola (X) : I reckon "to back" works perfectly" is this sentence
