Any suggestions for a snappy way of putting this? Talking about cloean energy tractors.

Hope this helps.

energetically self-sufficient

self-sufficient is quite used in "green" topics...

with a minimal carbon footprint

A lateral thinking solution:
"farm with a minimal carbon footprint"

Oh but it is snappy. You could put "zero carbon footprint" but its probably impossible unless you hold your breath.

I'm very surprised you ask. It is a key energy term in heavy use.
The logic is that the main goal of energy self-sufficient farms will be to reduce their Carbon footprint. The carbon (black stuff found in coal and oil) is the main dirty part of the energy which you want to "clean" with "clean energy".

According to wiki:
A carbon footprint is “the total set of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organisation, event or product” (UK Carbon Trust 2008). An individual, nation or organization's carbon footprint is measured by undertaking a GHG emissions assessment. Once the size of a carbon footprint is known, a strategy can be devised to reduce it.

And you can calculate your own carbon footprint here:

Then it is a con. The hydrogen is a wonderfully clean fuel with a zero carbon footprint by itself. Problem is that you have to use so much energy to produce the hydrogen that the total carbon footprint is enormous. The farm is clean, but the factory where the hydrogen is produced is really really dirty.
Unless it is using new six month old technology

"Currently, the steam reforming of natural gas produces most of our hydrogen. As a fuel source, this produces two problems. The process uses natural gas and so does not reduce reliance on fossil fuels; and, because one byproduct is carbon dioxide, the process contributes to the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the carbon footprint."

How do you produce your own compressed hydrogen?
Note from asker:
interesting. what does the term mean?
a bit too snazzy for the context. they're talking about not having to BUY diesel, but producing your own compressed hydrogen and storing it in underground tanks.
